Communications Associate

Background

The Maybe is seeking a Communications Associate for a 3-month trial contract beginning September 2025, with the potential for renewal or expansion based on mutual fit and organizational needs. This is a part-time contract role at 15-20 hours per week, compensated at $60-75/hour, depending on experience. The trial period will focus on supporting strategic communications across our media, collective, and consultancy verticals.

The Communications Associate will work closely with our PR Director to support our expanding PR Services offering, serving thought leaders and organizations across the tech and politics space. They will also play a key role in guest communications and promotion for our podcast, Computer Says Maybe, and provide support for the New Protagonist Network (NPN), a dynamic group of people working to challenge dominant narratives around AI, technology, and society.

This role is ideal for someone eager to gain hands-on experience in media relations, strategic communications, and digital content production, with the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from leading voices in tech and society.

Scope of Work

Client communications & coordination

  • Serve as a point of contact for select client accounts (with support)
  • Join client meetings, take notes, and track follow-ups and deliverables
  • Draft internal updates, timelines, and reports
  • Help manage scheduling and coordination across projects

Media relations

  • Monitor news cycles and trends to identify media opportunities
  • Draft press materials and targeted pitches
  • Build and maintain press contact lists
  • Support media outreach and relationship management
  • Track press opportunities and follow-ups

Media monitoring & reporting

  • Monitor news coverage and relevant trends for clients
  • Compile weekly and monthly coverage reports
  • Help analyze and present communications impact metrics
  • Track KPIs for clients

New Protagonist Network (NPN) support

  • Monitor and track media mentions and activity of NPN members
  • Maintain and update the NPN dashboard, including member blurbs and other content
  • Support coordination of NPN events, including scheduling, invites, and reminders
  • Update and maintain the AI-politics calendar
  • Assist in curating content for the monthly newsletter

Podcast communications & promotion

  • Manage podcast guest communications, including technical preparation and post-episode follow-ups
  • Draft outreach messages for guest placements and cross-promotion
  • Research relevant podcasts for promotion and guest opportunities
  • Aggregate episode information and context materials for internal team use
  • Support the upload and publication of episodes
  • Assist with the creation and sharing of promotional clips

  • Clients feel supported and confident in our communications work, with timely follow-ups, organized deliverables, and clear coordination
  • Our PR systems and processes are running smoothly
  • The podcast workflow is consistent and reliable, with guests well-informed, episodes published on time, and promotional materials shared effectively
  • The NPN is well-supported, with an updated dashboard, accurate calendar, and relevant content surfaced for the newsletter
  • The Communications Associate communicates proactively, anticipates needs, and takes ownership of their tasks and responsibilities
  • They demonstrate a growing understanding of the tech and politics media landscape, contributing insights that keep our work strategic and timely
  • Internal team members feel informed and supported through organized documentation and effective communication

What we're looking for

  • 1-3 years of experience in PR, strategic communications, media, or tech-politics-related fields
  • Strong writing, organizational, and project coordination skills
  • Tech-savvy and comfortable learning new tools — familiarity with tools like Notion, Inoreader, Google Workspace, Canva, Riverside, Descript, and social media platforms is a plus
  • A proactive communicator who is also highly detail-oriented
  • Curious about narrative change and the role of storytelling in shifting power and shaping public understanding
  • Some understanding of the tech power and politics space: a general understanding of key players in the field, a basic fluency with industry language and landscape, and an ability to adapt quickly to a complex subject matter
  • Comfortable with light admin tasks that keep systems running smoothly
  • Able to manage multiple moving parts and communicate clearly across timelines, platforms, and team members
  • Available to begin work in September 2025
